Barcelona moved ahead of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, for 24 hours at least, after beating Leganes 5-1 thanks to goals from Lionel Messi (2), Luis Suarez, Neymar and Rafinha.
Luis Enrique’s side carried their free-scoring run into La Liga after thrashing Celtic 7-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Barcelona, who were already three goals ahead by half-time, took the lead against newly promoted Leganes in the 15th minute through Lionel Messi, who guided home Luis Suarez’s pass from the right-wing.
And Messi was on hand to return the favour as Barca doubled their advantage on 31 minutes, ending an impressive foray deep into Leganes territory by squaring for Suarez to score.
In the 44th minute the Blaugrana effectively ended the game as a contest as Neymar got his name on the scoresheet, Suarez turning provider again by giving his Brazilian teammate an empty net to roll the ball into.
Messi added a fourth from the penalty spot early in the second-half after Neymar was fouled by Unai Bustinza.
Shortly afterward Luis Enrique took the opportunity to shuffle his pack, introducing Paco Alcacer and Arda Turan in place of and Ivan Rakitic and Suarez.
But that didn’t stop Barca adding a fifth goal in the 64th minute, Rafinha’s curling effort from outside the box the best of the bunch.
Andres Iniesta was next to be replaced, coming off for Denis Suarez.
Leganes pulled back a late consolation, the first ever top flight goal at their Butarque stadium, through Gabriel Appelt Pires’ free kick.
